Egyptian Family Tree

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

Deity worship was a crucial part of everyday life in ancient Egypt, and we know of more than 1,500 gods by name. With the exception of the reign of Akhenaten (17 years, in 14th c BCE), the Egyptians were a polytheistic religion. Today, we know the Egyptian deities by their ancient Greek names, and we’ll be talking about Amun, Ra, Horus, Hathor, Sekhmet, Maat, Osiris, Isis, Set, Bastet, Anubis, Ptah, and Thoth. We also share their correspondences, and where they fit in with each other.

Lucid Dreaming

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

A lucid dream is a dream in which you’re aware you’re dreaming and can possibly control different aspects of the dream. Some can access this state naturally, and for others this is a learnable skill to interpret and control your dreams. While there’s a lot we don’t know about lucid dreaming, science is starting to understand methods to enter a lucid dream state, and how it can help you.

In this episode, we discuss why you would want to lucid dream, how to do it, and key techniques that can help you in both your waking and sleeping state. We also go over our own experiences, and thoughts on lucid dreaming, and how it can help you.

Ostara 104: Weather Magic

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

Ostara is held on the Vernal or Spring Equinox, which is the beginning of astronomical spring. On this day, night and day are equal, and each day after it is longer than the last until the summer solstice. Festivals for the spring equinox are associated with new beginnings, eggs, rabbits, flowers, and rebirth. Spring is also a season where in the span of a week, you can experience sunny, windy, and rainy days—so let’s find a way to harness that and add it to our magical repertoire!

In this episode, we discuss the history of the Tempestarii, who were weathermancers in the middle ages, and some of the spells they were reported to have used. We also give you a bunch of ideas for you to incorporate weather magic into your practice, and talk about our own experiences using weather magic.

Enki Deep Dive

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

One of the Anunnaki, Enki is the Sumerian god of water, knowledge, crafts, and keeper of the divine powers called Me. Enki is a complicated and many faceted god, and as patron god of one of the oldest temples in one of the world’s oldest cities, many of the themes associated with him echo through time, mythology, and religion.

In this episode, we discuss Enki’s iconography, family, and his temple. We also talk about the ways you can work with Enki and what his energy is like, share our personal takes, and experiences with him and the idea of leaving offerings. We also read an excerpt of one of Enki’s primary myths, “Enki and the World Order.”

Note:

In this episode, we mention @miniminuteman’s videos about Ur. We were incorrect—he does not visit Ur in these videos, but he does visit several sites in southern Turkey, some of which are even older than Ur. Yule 104: Snow and Ice Magic

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

Yule traditionally starts on the Winter Solstice and ends on Jan 1, though it used to last for two months which meant this festive season helped get you through the coldest, darkest part of year. It’s also the season most associated with snow and ice.

For this year’s 104 series, we’re delving into elemental magic, and what better way to start with snow and ice magic! While technically a subset of water magic, snow and ice have unique properties and spells that make the great to add to your spell repertoire.

We also discuss ways to honor the season of Yule, extending that holiday feeling all the way through Imbolc. There’s deities associated with snow and ice, too. Of course, we round out the episode by talking about how we celebrate Yule.

Curses and Hexes

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

Cursing and hexing is a controversial subject within the pagan community. The whole idea around curses being evil or giving you bad luck is not as deeply rooted in magical practice as you might think, especially in ancient times. In this episode, we explore the concept of the Three-fold Law, and the phrase "An it harm none, do what ye will" and how they came to be, and the division of ‘High’ or ‘White’ magic and ‘Low’ or ‘Black’ magic.

We go over several ancient curses, from a variety of sources—some of which dating back thousands of years! As usual, we spend a bit of time talking about our own experiences and preferences with curses and hexes.

Pub Chat: What Creature do you Relate to?

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to Pub Chat! These episodes are for us to have a more free-form way to discuss listener questions, shorter subjects, as well as magical happenings, musings, and of course, go off on tangents.

In this week's Pub Chat, we ask the question what creature do you relate to the most and why? A simple question on the surface but one that reveals much. So, we recently watched an interview with Guillermo del Toro and Mike Flanagan where this question was posed and couldn’t help but explore this idea as a novel approach to self-analysis and a fun way to celebrate the spooky season.
